On 14 August 2024, the UN Security Council held a closed session to discuss the situation in the Georgian territories occupied by Russia, as well as the broader Russia-Georgia conflict, in light of the 16th anniversary of the war between the two countries.
2024 marks the 16th anniversary of Russia's full-scale military aggression against Georgia. After 16 years, the Russian Federation still continues occupation of Georgia's integral Abkhazia and Tskhinvali regions, in violation of the 12 August 2008 Ceasefire agreement brokered by the European Union and in blatant disregard of the fundamental principles and norms of international law. This is confirmed by numerous decisions of the International Criminal Court and the European Court of Human Rights between 2021 and 2024.
On 4 June 2024, in New York, the UN General Assembly adopted a resolution titled “Status of internally displaced persons and refugees from Abkhazia, Georgia and the Tskhinvali region/South Ossetia, Georgia” during its 78th session. This resolution, initiated by Georgia and 63 other countries from various regions, received support from 103 countries.
