STATEMENT BY THE MINISTRY OF FOREIGN AFFAIRS OF GEORGIA ON ILLEGALLY HOLDING THE RUSSIAN PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS IN GEORGIA’S OCCUPIED REGIONS

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Georgia condemns holding of Russian Presidential elections and illegal opening of the polling stations in Georgia’s occupied regions, aimed at mass engagement of the local population in the Russian electoral process.

Annual multinational exercise - Sea Breeze kicks off in its 21st iteration in the Black Sea region, designed to enhance interoperability of participating nations and strengthen maritime security. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Defence represent  at the exercise.

Annual multinational exercise - Sea Breeze kicks off in its 21st iteration in the Black Sea region, designed to enhance interoperability of participating nations and strengthen maritime security. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and the Ministry of Defence represent at the exercise. 🔹 This year, along with the crew and the Boarding Team, the Coast Guard Department of the MIA participates with two patrol 🛳️ DIOSKURIA and OCHAMCHIRE, while the 31st Battalion of the 3rd Infantry Brigade of the Western Command of the Georgian Defence Forces will take part in the field exercise. The Special Operations Forces Dive Team will be part of the naval diving exercise in the port of Odesa while officers of the Georgian Coast Guard and the MoD will be working at the Sea Breeze 2021 headquarters. 🔹 Cohosting the exercise during 28 June-10 July, the 🇺🇸 Sixth Fleet and the 🇺🇦 Navy this year welcome the largest number of participating nations in the exercise’s history with 32 countries from 6 continents providing 5,000 troops, 32 ships, 40 aircraft, and 18 special operations and dive teams. Standing NATO Maritime Group 2 (SNMG2) also takes part in the maritime exercise.

David Zalkaliani discussed the destructive actions of the Russian Federation on the Forum dedicated to South Caucasus. According to the Georgian Vice Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs, David Zalkaliani, considering the destructive actions of the Russian Federation, it is important for Georgia’s strategic partners, the US, EU and Turkey, to engage more actively in the processes of the region. The Minister stated this during his address to the Forum dedicated to the region of South Caucasus. According to this statement, Georgia continues its constructive approach despite Russia’s destructive policy in terms of de facto annexation of Georgian territories.

On April 2021, 20, Georgian Ambassador Giorgi Janjgava held a meeting with the chairman and CEO of the State Company of the Turkish Republic ′′ ASELSAN ′′ State Company, Haluk Gorgun. At the meeting, the parties discussed the relevant agencies of Georgia and Turkey, the opportunities to share experience in the field of defence industry and deepen cooperation. In addition, at the meeting, the parties celebrated with satisfaction the close and successful cooperation between Georgia and Turkey in the field of defense. It is worth noting that the company ′′ ASELSAN ′′ is among the 50 largest defence industry companies in the world.

On April 2021, 19, with the organization and involvement of the Embassy of Georgia, Deputy Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development of Georgia, David Tchabeishvili, along with his accompanying delegation, visited Ankara on a working visit, within which he held a meeting of the Minister of Energy and Natural Resources of Turkey With deputy abdullah tanjan. 🔷 In addition, within the framework of this visit, there were meetings of Georgian energy companies (Georgian energy exchange, Georgian State Electricity System, Electricity Market Operator) with their Turkish colleagues (EMRA, TEIAS, EPIAS, EUAS). 🔷 The meetings discussed the wide range of cooperation between Turkey and Georgia in the energy field, within which the Georgian side welcomed Turkey's readiness to share its experience on energy regulations, as well as provide technical assistance if necessary. 🤝 At the end of the meeting, the parties agreed to continue working to further deepen existing active cooperation.

Speaking to Daily Sabah, Janjgava underlined that “Russia’s attempt to forcibly redraw the sovereign borders in Europe largely destabilized the security environment in the wider Black Sea region, and was a huge blow on entire rules-based international order.” “If we look at the map, the Black Sea is now surrounded by Russian military strongholds,” he added, elaborating that “there are Georgia’s occupied regions of Abkhazia and Tskhinvali/South Ossetia, where the Russian Federation has been strengthening its illegal military presence, holding two full-fledged military bases with more than 10,000 troops and multiple missile launch systems.” Janjgava further gave the example of Crimea saying “Moscow holds over 30,000 Russian troops and sophisticated armaments while maintaining its effective control over Eastern Ukraine with over 40,000 troops.”

On the occasion of the opening of the Theatre, French Diplomat, Edmond de Bares published an article at the French Journal “L’illustration” on 25 October 1851 accompanied by illustrations below. The Theater, accommodating 700 spectators, was located in the vicinity of the current Freedom Square, Tbilisi. Building was designed by an Italian architect, Giovanni Scudieri, while the interior was decorated by artist, Grigory Gagarin. Unfortunately, the Opera Theatre building was destroyed by fire on 11 October 1874.

On February 23rd a meeting was held between the Georgian Foreign Minister, David Zalkaliani and the Deputy Foreign Minister of the Republic of Turkey, Sedat Önal, who conducted a working visit to Georgia.

Further perspectives of development of the strategic development between Georgia and Turkey were discussed. The successful and fruitful cooperation between the two states was noted in many dimensions, including political, trade, economy, transportation, energy sectors, etc. Additionally, the vast potential of deepening said cooperation was also underscored during the meeting. A particular emphasis was made on holding high-level visits. The issue of holding a session of the strategic cooperation council between Georgia and Turkey was also discussed. Additionally, the parties discussed the existing new realities of the region, challenges, threats and perspectives for cooperation. It was particularly underscored that Georgia views the bilateral economic projects as of having especial importance. During the meeting the Turkish party, once again, reconfirmed its staunch support for Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as Georgia’s Euro-Atlantic aspirations.
